Writing – Example 4

An Easy "Give Away" —  Spellings

Knossos is one of four Minoan palaces that was uncovered in the 1900s. The other palaces are located in Mallia, Phaistos and Zakro. However, Knossos was the centre that radiated the light of one of the most brilliant civilizations. During the Neopalatial period, Knossos was at the height of its splendour. At Knossos, archaeologists found the finest examples of colorful frescoes, intricate jewelry, finely-made ceramic jars, as well as the most sophisticated knowledge of plumbing, and functional architectural design.

Verdict:  Plagiarized.

  1. The sudden switch to British spelling immediately catches the insturctor's eye. Note: splendour (Br.) colorful (Amer.)
  2. Details are included that are not "common knowledge".

Recommendation:  Cite your source for the borrowed information:

  1. Use quotation marks to enclose a borrowed sentence. Use brackets within a quote to add necessary words "[It was] one…   or   It was "one  …"
  2. Use an in-text citation and then include the full source in the "works cited" list. (See Citation styles.)
